11 November 2010 - Dove hunting season ended a few weeks back, but the Broncos are still all about hunting birds. Tonight they took down the Prosper HS Eagles 56-24 and the Richardson HS Eagles 42-33 in a packed home meet. Six men won twice: senior 112-pounder Dalton Slattery, junior 130-pounder Payne Wilson, sophomore 135-pounder Grant Johnson, senior 140-pounder Tyler Casey, sophomore 145-pounder Josh Chiavetta, and freshman 215-pounder Krystn Andrade. In the dominating performance against Prosper, not only did our boys get the first takedown in EVERY MATCH, Prosper did not score a single takedown against us. We were able to pin 8 of their guys in 13 matches. In the second dual against Richardson, after a first match loss by junior David Fletcher, the Broncos reeled off four straight victories. Junior Payne Wilson won a decision, sophomore made quick work of his opponent with a 20 second pin, senior Tyler Casey followed suit with a 1:56 pin, and sophomore Josh Chiavetta built a 17-4 lead before pinning his opponent in 5:17. At that point, the Broncos would lead by 15 points; a lead which would dwindle, then disappear. We lost three straight matches - sophomore Nick Rosetti by major decision, sophomore Jonah Chen by fall, and junior Connor Williams by technical fall. At the completion of the first 8 matches, the score was tied at 21. In 3 of the final 7 matches, the teams traded forfeits (103, 119, and 180, as well as a double forfeit at 285). The three remaining contested matches consisted of: senior Drew Taylor losing by fall, freshman Krystn Andrade winning in dramatic last-second fashion 12-11, and senior Dalton Slattery icing the win with an 18 second fall. |

Parents Meeting Provides a Wealth of Knowledge on Upcoming Season 07 October 2010 - Coach Clayton led a roomful of parents through details about the exciting upcoming season of Bronco wrestling. He rolled out the Wrestler's Handbook, unveiled the varsity and junior varsity schedules, and answered a litany of questions from anticipatory parents.Following are some of the highlights: a First day of practice on the 18th. a Intrasquad exhibition on 11/4. a Weight certification on 11/7. a Practice is from 2:45 - 5:00 daily. a If you are going to miss practice, tell Coach beforehand. a Always conduct yourself with pride. a Study hard and if you need help, ask for it. a Proper nutrition is essential - making weight should never be an issue. |
Varsity Competes at Mustang Showdown 13 November 2010 - A short-handed varsity squad took on the field at the JJ Pearce Mustang Showdown and crowned one champ. Dalton Slattery pinned both of his opponents in less than a total of 5 minutes en route to his 1st place finish. Tyler Casey pinned his first opponent and lost in the finals by major decision en route to a second place finish. Five other Broncos came home with fourth-place finishes: Colton Mitchell, Zach Clark, Grant Johnson, Nick Rossetti, and Krystn Andrade. |

JV Makes Some Noise at JJ Pearce 13 November 2010 - The future of Bronco wrestling made a name for themselves at the JJ Pearce Mustang Showdown. Of the 12 JV wrestlers competing, seven went home with hardware. 103-pounder Jared McCormick pinned his way through the tournament and was the lone Boyd champion. Four Broncos came in second. Ty Henderson pinned his way through all opponents before facing McCormick in an all-Boyd final. Payne Wilson, Jamie Glew, and Tim Johnson all made it to the finals at their weights before falling. Zach Tarrant showed a lot of heart after losing in the first round, he won the rest of his matches for 3rd place. Alex Velasquez won the prize for "Beast of the Tournament". After quickly pinning his first round opponent, and losing a tight one 3-0, he reeled off two straight pins. Total mat time in the victories was just over three minutes and anyone who saw him lift his helpless opponent four feet off the ground and lower him to his back for a pin knows why Alex is the Beast! |
Navy Sends Red Packing 04 November 2010 - The Red and Navy squads put on an awesome show in the inaugural outing for the McKinney Boyd wrestlers, with the Navy team winning 43-34. After explaining the basics of wrestling to a densely packed gym, Coach / Referee / Emcee Clayton got the matches rolling. Ty Henderson got Navy on the board with a 15-2 win over Mitch Anderson. Red scored two straight falls by Jared McCormick (over Austin Gaus) and Dalton Slattery (over David Fletcher). Navy answered with a pin by Payne Wilson (over Tim Johnson) and a 6-1 decision by Zach Clark over Colton Mitchell. The next three matches were also decided by fall with Damon Hodges (Navy) pinning Kevin Hames, Jared Gibson (Red) pinning Justice Hopkins, and Tyler Casey (Navy) pinning Jamie Glew. In a scoring explosion, Josh Chiavetta (Red) scored a major decision over Zach Tarrant, 20-12. With Jordan Roberts scoring an 11-7 decision over Nick Rossetti, the match score was tied at 25 each. With five matches to go, each remaining bout was crucial. Kade Dorris (Navy) stormed out and scored a pin. Red answered with an 8-2 decision by Parker Kennemer (over Connor Williams) and a pin by Drew Taylor (over Harrison Santiago).With Red leading by three points with only two matches to go, two wrestlers from Navy had to give it their all. And they did. Sean White (Navy) pinned Krystn Andrade and Ramon Flores (Navy) pinned Alden Belk. Boyd Wrestlers Get By Lucas Lovejoy 01 December 2010 - The McKinney Boyd Bronco wrestlers took the lead after 14 of 15 matches and were able to hang on, defeating the Lucas Lovejoy Leopards 36-34. The Broncos only won four of the 13 contested matches on the night, but won all four by fall. Pinners were Tyler Casey, Drew Taylor, Dalton Slattery, and Colton Mitchell. Broncos Make Impressive Showing at Cougar Duals 04 December 2010 - The Bronco wrestlers took two duals and almost got the third at the Cougar Duals at Fort Worth Western Hills. After defeating the host team 60-27, the Broncos lost 45-33 to Fort Worth Country Day, and finished the day with a victory against Trimble Tech, 64-15. Undefeated wrestlers on the day were: Dalton Slattery (two pins and a forfeit), Payne Wilson (two pins), Tyler Casey (two pins and a forfeit), Connor Williams (two pins), and White (two pins and a forfeit). The Broncos defeated Western Hills in impressive style, winning 10 of 15 matches (8 fall, two forfeit). Although the Broncos lost by 12 against Country Day, it was far closer than it looked; three matches were lost by two or fewer points. The Broncos only lost two matches against a short-handed Trimble Tech, en route to a 49-point victory. |

Boyd Falls to Frisco Liberty on Alumni Night 16 December 2010 - McKinney Boyd proudly welcomed home a handful of its former wrestlers on Alumni Night, but our current stable was unable to emerge victorious, losing to Frisco Liberty, 69-18. Boyd won only three matches on the night, with falls from Dalton Slattery, Payne Wilson, and Drew Taylor. The Junior Varsity won four of its seven matches, with victories coming from Austin Gaus, Jared McCormick, Jamie Glew and a dramatic overtime victory from Tim Johnson. 18 November 2010 - In a meet that saw only seven contested matches, the Broncos were able to overcome the Rangers of Dallas Jesuit, 47-24. With a huge image of mascot Yosemite Sam looking down upon them, three men led the Bronco charge. Dalton Slattery faced an opponent that refused to stay down - for a while, anyway. Our senior 112-pounder continued to wear him out, en route to a 12-2 major decision. The first period of our senior 135-pounder Tyler Casey's match was pretty close. Little did we know that Mr. Casey was tiring out his opponent. Early in the second period, he descended on his prey, constantly punishing him, en route to a lop-sided 23-10 victory. Sophmore 160-pounder Jonah Chen used a similar philosophy of keeping it close for a while, then attacking. Chen scored seven of his nine points in the third period to beat his opponent 9-2. |
