McKinney Boyd Wrestlers Split at
Double Dual
01 December 2009 - The McKinney Boyd Bronco wrestling team
split a pair of dual meets last night, crushing host RL Turner 71-9
and getting edged by Frisco High 36-45. This brings the Bronco
dual meet record to 3-1. Double winners on the night were
Slattery, Dauterive, Mitchell, Dishner, Hoisington, Faris, and Rose.
Against RL Turner, the Broncos were victorious in 12 of 14
matches and, in those wins, were only on the mat for an average
of 1 minute and 11 seconds! Way to take it to 'em.

The Junior Varsity won 10 of 23 matches, with 7 of the 10 wins
coming from fall or technical fall. The JV is making great progress
this yer. Keep up the good work.

JV special recognition of the night:
* Quickest fall goes to David Fletcher for his 0:40 second disposal
of his opponent. Nice work David.
* Efficiency expert award goes to Tevin Hawthorne, who
crushed his first opponent by a score of 17-0 in a mere 2:15.
Way to go Tevin.
* Progress award goes to Michael Rose, who pinned an opponent
to which he had lost to earlier in the year. Way to let him know
how things are going to be, Michael.

Broncos JV Wrestlers Make Noise at Texas Toughman Tournament
21 November 2009 - At the Texas Toughman Tournament at Bishop Lynch HS, 16 of our JV wrestlers proved that the future
looks bright for McKinney Boyd Wrestling! Nearly 60% of the JV matches we wrestled resulted in McKinney Boyd pinning their
opponent!

Five wrestlers went undefeated on the day: Colton Mitchell (4-0), Rich Henderson (3-0), Zach Coleman (4-0), Drew Taylor
(3-0) and Harrison Santiago (3-0).

Five others had only one loss on the day: Garrett Binkley (3-1), Coy Coburn (3-1), Payne Wilson (2-1), Zach Clarke (2-1) and
Sheldon Rose (2-1)

Other wrestlers competing in this hard-fought competition were Michael Rose (3-2), Robert Tucker (2-2), Robbie Gilbertson
(2-3), Jonah Chen (1-2), Nick Rosetti (1-2), and Jordan Roberts (0-4).

JV special recognition of the tournament:
* "Stud of the Day" honors goes to Colton Mitchell. Colton faced and destroyed four opponents. None of his prey made it
through the first period without counting the lights and hearing the undeniably horrific sound of the referee slapping the mat.
Colton's total mat time was only 4 minutes and 18 seconds to beat four guys! Congratulations Colton. Keep it up.

* "Efficiency Expert" award for the night goes to two guys: Rich Henderson and Zach Coleman. Rich pinned all three of the
guys he faced in 1:05, 1:13 and 1:05. Zach pinned all four of the guys he faced in 0:52, 1:14, 0:50, and 1:51. Nice work fellas!
You make it look easy.

* "Best Transition from Coach to Wrestler" award goest to Harrison Santiago. Some of you may remember him for his role a
few weeks back as a gruff wrestling coach in Boyd HS production of "Footloose". Now you'll remember him as the Texas
Toughman, he won all three of his matches.

Boyd Wrestlers Crush Competition at Cougar Duals
05 December 2009 - Five up and five down: the McKinney Boyd defeated all challengers to take top honors at
the Cougar Duals at Fort Worth Western Hills. En route to improving their dual record to 8-1, five Bronco
wrestlers won all five of their matches on the day: 103-pounder Dalton Slattery (pinned all opponents),
112-pounder Mike Dauterive, 130-pounder Jarrett Hale (pinned all opponents), 171-pounder Eric Johnson, and
285-pounder AJ Groce (pinned all opponents). Mike Dauterive improved his record to 14-1 with wins over two
of the state’s top 112-pounders. In the finals versus Saginaw, freshman 180-pounder Jonah Chen got an upset
pin over his opponent and set the stage for a dramatic overtime win and pin by senior Jarrett Hale to seal the
victory in the match and the tournament. Congratulations Broncos!

Broncos Send Hawks Flying for
Ninth Win
10 December 2009 - The crowd was large and the
excitement palpable, as the Boyd Bronco wrestlers
celebrated "Teacher Appreciation Night", by defeating
Rockwall Heath, 42-33, to run their dual record to 9-1. The
meet had more than its share of awesome matches.
Laurence Pajela and Lawson Faris made quick work of
their opponents, pinning them in 1:11 and 1:16,
respectively. Parker Mitchell seemed to pin his guy several
times, en route to a 17-7 major decision. Daniel Romero
scored a late take down and near fall in winning the highest
scoring match of the night, 17-13. In perhaps the most
heart-stopping match of the night, Eric Johnson and his
opponent went back and forth over three periods, with Eric
prevailing by pinning his guy in the third period.

The Junior Varsity had a bit of a rocky road, victorious in
only three of 15 matches. Victories came from Colton
Mitchell, Michael Rose, and Zach Coleman. JV is back in
action on 11 December at the Plano Tournament.

JV Grapplers Make Hardware Haul at Taylor-Webb
11 December 2009 - Half of the 22 Junior Varsity wrestlers making the trip to Plano High
School came home with shiny hardware around their neck. The Taylor-Webb Classic
proved fertile ground for the Broncos to showcase their talents. Five student athletes
received 1st place, two received second, and three received third. All wrestled with heart
and skill, but five guys require specific congratulations:

* Mr. Efficient - Mateo Black. En route to a first place finish, Mateo pinned is first four
guys in a total of 2:08. Mateo didn't even break a sweat until after the sun went down! In
each performance, Mateo spent more time removing his sweats than wrestling!

* The Dominator - Colton Mitchell. Two of his guys, Colton pinned in a total of 2:25. The
remaining three, he outscored 22-1 (and the one point he gave up, he let the guy up!). At
one point in each match, Colton seemed to "break" his opponent and it was over.

* The Pinner - Zach Coleman. Zach pinned all five of his opponents in an average of
1:24. In his fifth match, after a full day's work, Zach decked his guy in a mere 0:28!

* The Beast - Danny Romero. Sure, Danny pinned three guys and outscored the other
two 16-2. But the look of fear in each of their eyes as Danny ripped through them was truly
awesome.

* Mr. Business - Coy Coburn. Coy pinned three guys and beat the other two 12-4.
Between matches, he calmly sat in the stands chatting, reading, and listening to music. Then
he "went to work", ripping another guy apart. Then, calm again.
Varsity Grabs 2nd Place Finish at Taylor-Webb
13 December 2009 - In another dominating performance, the varsity Bronco wrestlers
racked up four champions en route to a 2nd place finish at the Taylor-Webb Classic in
Plano. Pinning his way through the tourney was senior stand-out 171 pounder Eric
Johnson, who spent only 3:17 on the mat. Also pinning all of his opponents was
285-pound senior AJ Groce, who spent a mere 1:26 on the mat. Other champions were
Mike Dauterive, with two pins and a major decision, and Parker Mitchell, with two pins
and a decision. Other placewinners were 103-pound junior Dalton Slattery (2nd),
145-pound senior Tyler Hoisington (3rd), and 160-pound junior Drew Taylor (4th).

Congratulations to all of the McKinney Boyd wrestlers! Between the fantastic showings
of JV and Varsity at the two-day Taylor-Webb Classic, you have proven once again that
you are a force to be reckoned with in North Texas!
Varsity Steals Win from Frisco Liberty, 47-38
16 December 2009 - On a night where the cheering Broncos were louder than the home crowd, Boyd wrestlers won the last three matches to secure the meet, 47-38. There were many heroes in
this meet, and the crowd certainly got its money's worth - it was edge-of-the-seat, nail-biting action in every match.

JV Makes Solid Showing Against Frisco Liberty
16 December 2009 - The Junior Varsity wrestling team won four and dropped four
matches in a showdown against Frisco Liberty. All of the JV guys worked hard and
put forth excellent effort, but three require specific mention:

* Colton "the Phenom" Mitchell never let his opponent in the match, winning 6-0. In
his last six matches, Colton has been untouchable: his opponents have collectively
scored 1 point. Does anyone remember the last time this guy lost?

* Danny "the Beast" Romero continues to stare his opponents into submission. His
Frisco Liberty opponent made it barely a minute. If this guy bear hugs you, get ready
to start counting lights.

103-pound junior Dalton Slattery made short work of his
opponent, pinning him in only 0:22 seconds. Next senior
112-pounder Mike Dauterive stepped on the mat. At first,
his opponent put up a fight, but he was forced to
succomb to Mike's superior skill, being pinned in 0:53
seconds. The next three bouts were hard on the
Broncos, with freshman 119-pounder Mateo Black,
sophomore 125-pounder Rich Henderson, and junior
130-pounder Coy Coburn each being pinned. After
senior 135 pounder Jarrett Hale lost 16-1, the team
score was 38-32, with the Broncos on the wrong end.
18-19 December 2009 - The Bronco varsity wrestlers travelled to Frisco for
two days of wrestling and emerged with 4 victories against 2 losses in the
Frisco Dual Classic. Seven wrestlers anchored the team, amassing 36 of the
team's 50 individual match victories.

Four wrestlers had their way with the competition, defeating all six of their
opponents. Team co-captain Mike Dauterive collected his 100th career win
en route to four falls, a forefeit and a decision. Team co-captain Eric Johnson
pinned his way through the tournament - spending less than 8 minutes on the
mat spread across six opponents. Tyler Hoisington collected bonus points in
each of his matches, with four falls and two major decisions. Dalton Slattery
crushed his opponents with four falls, one technical fall and one decision.

Three other wrestlers defeated four of their opponents. Jarrett Hale and RB
Shepherd each pinned four. Parker Mitchell gained a major decision and three
decisions.
The dual started with 160-pound sophmore Drew Taylor accepting a forefeit. Senior 171-pounder Eric Johnson started the Broncos in their winning ways, building a 9-point lead before pinning his
opponent in the first period. 180-pound senior Logan Faris then lost a heartbreaker 8-5. After senior 189 pounder RB Shepherd lost by fall and the Broncos forefeited 215, the team was on the
wrong end of 15-12 score.

08-09 January 2010 - McKinney Boyd sent 10 of its
best to take on the 65-team field over two days at the
Cy-Fair ISD tournament in Houston. All of our
student-athletes scored points for the Broncos and
three walked away as placewinners. Leading the pack
was 103-pounder Mike Dauterive, who pinned 4 of his 5
opponents and thrashed a tough guy in the finals by
pinning him in merely 24 seconds! Placing 8th were
112-pounder Dalton Slattery and 140-pounder Tyler
Hoisington.

All of our wrestlers gained excellent experience
wrestling at one of the largest tournament in Texas.
Congratulations to all that participated - you
represented McKinney Boyd well!
Dauterive Wins Outstanding Wrestler!
For the first time in McKinney Boyd Wrestling
history, one of our own brought home the OW award.
In what has become commonplace in his career,
Mike turned in a stellar performance en route to the
gold, pinning two opponents and destroying the
wrestler in the finals, 10-0. Congrats on being named
Outstanding Wrestler, Mike. We're proud of you!
06 January 2010 - The McKinney Boyd wrestlers put in another impressive performance,
crushing Quinlan Ford Panthers 66-24 and soundly beating host Richardson Berkner Rams,

their opponents. Of the 20 individual matches won, 14 were by fall, 5 by forfeit and only one
by decision.

Senior Night a Smashing Success
14 January 2010 - A near capacity crowd packed the McKinney Boyd gym to watch the Broncos thump the Frisco
Wakeland Wolverines 57-19 and to honor our seniors on the last home dual meet. The junior varsity started the
night with Mateo Black and Coy Coburn leading the charge with victories. After the JV matches completed, seniors
paraded with loved ones in front of the cheering spectators, with Coach Clayton showering each in praise.
Following that, it was time to get down to business.

Junior 112-pounder Dalton Slattery started us off with a 9-5 decision. After a 13-5 loss by junior 119-pounder
Laurence Pajela, Tyler Casey dominated his opponent, pinning him 17 seconds into the second period. Then the
seniors started. Senior 130-pounder Jarrett Hale crushed his opponent, sticking him in 2:39. Senior 135-pounder
Parker Mitchell won by forfeit, perhaps because the Wolverines heard he had notched the second-most victories in
Boyd history! Senior 140-pounder Tyler Hoisington lost a heartbreaker, 7-5. Senior 145-pounder Cameron Dishner
made short work of his opponent, pinning him in 1:12.

The Broncos hit some tough opponents when Senior 152-pounder Danny Romero and sophomore 160-pounder
Zack Coleman were pinned. With the momentum starting to shift (the wrong way), someone needed to get the
crowd back into it. Fortunately, Senior co-captain, 171-pounder Eric Johnson was next on the mat. With his typical
"I dare you to tie up with me" style, Eric toyed with his prey for nearly three minutes before pinning him. It went
downhill for the Wolverines from there. Really downhill. Senior 180-pounder Lawson Faris stuck his opponent in
4:30. After a forfeit was given up at 189, Junior 215-pounder RB Shepherd pinned his guy in the second period.

With three pins in a row for Boyd, Senior 285-pounder AJ Groce wanted to keep the streak alive. He did so in grand
fashion with a 16 second pin of his stunned opponent. One match to go . . . All-American, co-captain, 103-pounder
Mike Dauterive. Before an rowdy home crowd, Mike was off the mat in 16 seconds--another pin for the Broncos.

Once again our Broncos did us proud. Great job seniors, we'll miss you!

Bronco opponents were shaking in their singlets when the middle of our lineup approached:
our middle four (135 lbs - 152 lbs) PINNED ALL OPPONENTS faced. Congratulations to:
135-pounder Jarrett Hale, 140-pounder Parker Mitchell, 145-pounder Tyler Hoisington (only
on the mat 64 seconds!), and 152-pounder Cameron Dishner. Other double winners on the
night were 103-pounder Mike Dauterive (pin, forfeit), 112-pounder Dalton Slattery (pin,
decision), 119-pounder Laurence Pajela (pin, forfeit) and 160-pounder Eric Johnson (pin,
forfeit).
Four McKinney matmen dominated all opponents. Senior 103 pounder
Mike Dauterive made it look easy with a 30-second fall and a 3-minute
technical fall. Junior 125-pounder Tyler Casey pinned his way through the
tournament, with none of his opponents lasting until the third period.
Senior 160-pounder Eric Johnson disposed of his first two opponents by
fall, then won in the finals 7-5. AJ Groce pinned his first opponent in the
first period. In a dramatic finish to the tournament, he rallied from a 3-0
deficit to pin his opponent with 0:29 seconds left in the bout.

The Junior Varsity wrestlers also were pinning machines, winning 3 of 4 matches.
Congratulations to Mason Nielson, Zach Coleman and Jonah Chen for making quick work of
their opponents and setting the stage for the varsity win.
Four Boyd wrestlers finished fourth. For junior 112-pounder Dalton Slattery and senior 130-pounder Jarrett
Hale, it was pin or be pinned - they pinned two opponents and were pinned twice. Senior 171-pounder
Lawson Faris pinned one opponent and lost by decision against two others. Deserving of special mention
is Senior 135-pounder Parker Mitchell. He beat two opponents by major decision, and lost a heartbreaker
5-4. In his match for third place, kindly put, there were some "questionable calls", all of which went against
him. After the match was over (which he won 5-4), a call was reversed and there were several OT periods,
with the final score against him 5-4. It seemed during that match all McKinney schools united for Parker to
win (judging by the amount of yelling in the gym!). Junior 152-pounder Parker Kennemer dominated his first
opponent 19-10, winning by major decision. He had some trouble with his next opponents and was pinned
both times.

06 February 2010 - Three JV wrestlers walked away as placewinners from the district
tournament at Lucas Lovejoy. The pack was led by freshman Colton Mitchell, who is making
first place commonplace. He edged his first opponent 2-0 before pinning his finals foe in 1:30.
Sophomore Coy Coburn rebounded strong from a first round loss with an 8-0 major decision
and 6-4 dramatic overtime victory. He lost a tough 3rd place bout. Freshman Josh Chiavetta
bounced back from a first round loss to reel off three straight wins, the first by fall, the second
by medical forfeit and the third by fall against the guy who beat him in the first round. He was
pinned in his thrid place bout.
Dautreive, Hale, Johnson, Groce Qualify - Dauterive Named Outstanding Wrestler - Clayton Named Coach of the Year!
Dauterive Punches Ticket to State
Congratulations to all of the
junior varsity wrestlers who
participated at districts and to
the whole JV squad on a great
season! The future of
McKinney Boyd Bronco
wrestling looks bright. Have a
great offseason and we look
forward to seeing you back
next year.
Johnson gets 6th - Hale and
Groce battle hard, but fall
06 February 2010 - Last year at this time, the McKinney Boyd
Bronco wrestlers were celebrating that they had doubled their
numbers going to regionals from the prior year. Well start the
celebration. Seniors Mike Dauterive and AJ Groce are making a
return engagement at regionals, and this time they're bringing
friends! Congratulations to seniors Jarrett Hale and Eric Johnson
as they make their first appearance at the regional tournament.

Dauterive pinned his way through the competition, spending little
more than four minutes on the mat. He was later named
Outstanding Wrestler for the 103-152 weight classes. Johnson
blasted through the first and second round competition pulled out a
3-2 victory in the final. Hale and Groce also dominated through the
first and second rounds, Hale with a major decision and Groce with
two sub-minute pins. Each fell in the finals to capture 2nd place.

Although 3rd place winners did not qualify for regionals, Boyd had
four wrestlers finish in third at districts. Junior Dalton Slattery was
defeated 8-7 in the first round based on a controversial call that
stopped wrestling for nearly 15 minutes. With all the character we
have come to expect from Slattery, he reeled off three straight
victories, the first two by fall, and the third against the opponent
who "beat" him first round. Because of that victory, he had the
opportunity to wrestle a solid McKinney North wrestler for a spot at
regionals. Slattery was defeated, but he should hold his head high!

Junior Tyler Casey was quickly defeated in his first round match,
but dominated his next two opponents by a combined score of
25-3, capturing third place. Senior Tyler Hoisington started strong
with a 15-2 victory, but was defeated in the second round. After
pinning his third opponent, Hoisington, won his 3rd place match
6-2. Senior Cameron Dishner beat his first round opponent, before
falling in the second round. Dishner went on a pinning spree,
defeating his final two opponents in just over three minutes each,
to gain third place honors.

Congratulations to Coach Clayton, who was recognized as Coach
of the Year - something the team has long realized, but it is nice to
know others see it too!

Congratulations to all of the varsity wrestlers who competed today,
regardless of what you placed. And for the guys who won't don the
Bronco colors again - Parker Mitchell, Tyler Hoisington, Cameron
Dishner, and Lawson Faris - Thank you for all of the memories.
You were instrumental in building the Boyd program and you'll be
missed!
12-13 February 2010 - By the time the
Region 3 Wrestling Tournament was
supposed to start, Dallas-Fort Worth
had received the most snow in a
24-hour period in over 50 years. When
the tournament started many hours late,
the first victory of the tournament came
from Boyd's Mike Dauterive, who
channeled the cold weather to put ice in
his veins and was unstoppable for two
days. Dauterive would not be denied a
second straight invitation to Austin in
the 103 pound weight class.

In his six matches, 160-pound
co-captain Eric Johnson battled like a
gladiator, wrestling until 11pm the first
night and starting back up the following
morning. Johnson's matches ran the
gamut from finesse-fest to brawl and he
put his heart into every one of them.
Eric ended his senior campaign with a
sixth place finish.

Senior 130-pounder Jarrett Hale and
senior 285-pounder AJ Groce battled
tough competitors, but were defeated in
their first two matches Both made an
early exit from the tournament.

Congratulations to all four of the
wrestlers who represented McKinney
Boyd at the Region 3 Wrestling
Tournament!
practically at will, with a takedown and two back points
in the first, a takedown in the second and a reversal and
two backpoints in the third. The final score was a major
decision with Dauterive winning 10-1.

In his final match of Day 1, Dauterive faced Sean
Lofgren of Houston Westside. The winner of this match
would have an automatic berth to the state tournament.
With the score 2-0 Dauterive going into the second
period, Dauterive chose down, scored an escape, a
takedown and pinned Lofgren in 3:34! Mike had a pretty
decent first day: he outscored his opponents 19-1,
pinned two of them, and earned a trip to State.

Day two was a District Championship re-match with
Mason Smout from Allen, with the Regional
Championship bragging rights on the line. These two
have faced each other multiple times, so the first period
resulted in a lot of hand fighting, but no scoring. Smout
chose down in the second period and Dauterive
contained him well until the last few seconds of the
period, when Smout reversed him. Trailing 2-0 going
into the third, Dauterive knew he had to get some
scoring going. That's when the scoring flurry began.
First he escaped and scored a takedown on Smout.
After a lot of hand fighting and double stall calls on both
wrestlers, Dauterive got another takedown and 2 nearfall
points. The match ended with an 8-4 score in favor of
Dauterive.

Mike ended the weekend without a single offensive
point being scored against him and was crowned the
Region 3 Champion for 103 pounds. Congratulations
Mike and good luck at State!
Devereaux from Rockwall. Johnson was taken down and
escaped for a 2-1 score at the end of 1. Devereaux chose
down and quickly escaped. Johnson answered with a
takedown and two back points before Devereaux scored a
reversal. At the end of 2, it was knotted up at 5 each.
Johnson chose down and Devereaux was successful in
turning him twice and committing a penalty for a final score
of 10-6, with Johnson losing.

Johnson entered the consolation bouts. Next up, Michael
Haar from Cinco Ranch. Johnson went out like a man among
boys and pinned Haar in 0:29 seconds. For his fourth and
final match of the day, Johnson faced Trent Parker from Clear
Springs. After a penalty against Parker and a takedown by
Parker, the first period ended with Johnson down 2-1.
Johnson chose down, escaped and scored a quick takedown
to take a 4-2 lead into the third period. After a Parker
takedown, Johnson had to score an escape to win - and he
did! Final score 5-4. Johnson lived to battle into day two.

First up for Johnson was Trevor Quick of Oak Ridge. Johnson
carried a 4-3 advantage into the third period. After escaping,
being taken down, and escaping, Johnson was ahead 6-5
with the clock winding down. With two seconds remaining on
the clock, Quick came through with a takedown to defeat
Johnson 7-5. In his last match of the day, Johnson faced
Andre Moore from West Brook for 5th place. Johnson carried
a 3-2 advantage into the second period, but Moore used an
escape, a takedown and three nearfalls to beat Johnson by
major decision, 12-3.

Eric captured sixth place at Regionals. Congratulations on a
great season and great career, Eric!
Dauterive's tournament
started with a match
against Stephen Carni
from Klein Collins. After a
slow first period, Dauterive
took charge in the second.
Selecting the bottom
position, Dauterive scored
a reversal and then
cradled Carni for a pin in
3:05. Up next was Tyler
Uverzagt from Seven
Lakes. This match had
Dauterive scoring
Johnson's first match was against
Kenny McIntyre from Lamar.
McIntyre started things off with a
quick takedown. Johnson,
unaccustomed to being taken
down by anyone, did what came
naturally - scored a reversal and
put McIntyre on his back for 3.
Then Johnson took him down in
the second. And in the third. And
added some back points. All
said, Johnson walked away with
the major decision, 11-2. Next up
was second-seeded Dylan
Mike Dauterive is a State Champion!
26-27 February 2010 - With all the resolve and skill we have come to expect from him, Mike Dauterive showed he
was the BEST 103-pounder in the state of Texas by defeating all opponents at the State Wrestling Tournament in
Austin this weekend. After pinning Michael Filewood (entered State with a 37-8 record) of Grapevine in 3:54 in the
first round, Mike went on to rout his second round opponent, Josh Mora (entered State with a 29-8 record) of
Tascosa, by a score of 7-0. In a much anticipated semi-final match-up, Mike edged Braun Marquez of Canyon
Randall (entered State with a 40-3 record) by a score of 4-2. With nerves of steel, Mike defeated his opponent in
the finals, Oscar Hernandez (entered State with a 39-4 record) of Borger, by a score of 5-3.

Mike finishes his senior season at Boyd with a record of 52-3 and the satisfaction of knowing that he is the best.
Congratulations Mike, the McKinney Boyd Booster Club is brimming with pride over your accomplishment and we
look forward to following your collegiate career.
